چکیده

The Clean Water Act of 1972 as amended in 1987 requires states to control the flow of pollution from storm water into local rivers. In most cases, this requirement is carried out through installation of an expensive system of pipes and pumps. The Tollgate Drainage District, Ingham County, Michigan, examined here, uses a more economical alternate approach: water from the district flows into an artificially created and maintained wetland designed to naturally clean the district’s storm water. This report examines the mechanisms at work in the Tollgate wetland, proposes a unit hydrograph and model for water flow, describes and discusses a simulation of the system designed by the authors based on these proposals, and gives conclusions and recommendations for further study. Appendices contain reference material on the relevant hydrological phenomena and a user’s manual for the simulation model.

Kinematic runoff and erosion model efficiency assessment for hydrological simulation of semi-arid watersheds

Hydrologic modeling of semi-arid watersheds is imperative for the development of appropriate water and soil conservation plans. In the current study, the efficiency of Kinematic Runoff and Erosion model-version 2 (K2) model was used to evaluate water discharge and sediment load simulation of Bar watershed, located in the north-eastern part of Iran. The K2 model relies on the kinematic wave appr...

Hydrological Conditions Affect the Interspecific Interaction between Two Emergent Wetland Species

Hydrological conditions determine the distribution of plant species in wetlands, where conditions such as water depth and hydrological fluctuations are expected to affect the interspecific interactions among emergent wetland species. To test such effects, we conducted a greenhouse experiment with three treatment categories, interspecific interaction (mixed culture or monoculture), water depth (...

A groundwater separation study in boreal wetland terrain: the WATFLOOD hydrological model compared with stable isotope tracers.

Monitoring of stable water isotopes (18O and 2H) in precipitation and surface waters in the Mackenzie River basin of northern Canada has created new opportunities for researchers to study the complex hydrology and hydroclimatology of this remote region. A number of prior studies have used stable isotope data to investigate aspects of the hydrological regime of the wetland-dominated terrain near...

SPECIAL ISSUE THE VALUES OF WETLANDS: LANDSCAPE AND INSTITUTIONAL PERSPECTIVES Approaches to valuing the hidden hydrological services of wetland ecosystems

This paper investigates the role of the production function approach in capturing the value of hydrological services of wetland ecosystems. Hydrological research in the Hadejia-Nguru wetlands in northern Nigeria suggests that the major role of the wet season inundation of the wetlands is in recharging the underlying aquifers. This paper shows that the hydrological services extend beyond direct ...
